The Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer who holds the post of the senior-most executive magistrate of a district in India is known as a District Magistrate, or DM. A D.M. is a district magistrate who is in charge of the general administration of a particular Indian district. In India, there are approximately 718 districts, each of which is led by a D.M.
