The Faculty of the University of California, San Diego School of Design (UCSD) is accredited for its leading BFA program in the field of interior design, the Bachelor of Science in Interior Design. It is also recognized as a graduate school in design with a bachelor's degree in architectural design and a master's degree in design. Our Interior Design Program is considered one of the most prestigious interior design programs in the United States. It is the only architecturally oriented program of its kind in North America and we have helped to develop a contemporary interior design profession. Edith Wharton had an important influence on this new profession, writing a handbook on interior design in America in 1897 with the architect Ogden Codman. In the book, the author denounced the old-fashioned way of decorating a room that she explained was considered "old-fashioned" and is now considered luxurious and comfortable. She explained that the rooms should be modern, with modern furnishings, modern lighting and modern materials. Interior designers, on the other hand, must have a recognised education, and most interior design firms require designers to have at least a bachelor's degree, although formal training is not an absolute must. An associate or bachelor is a prerequisite for working in the field of interior design. Interior designers for furniture companies will most likely do their work for high-end architectural firms, but not for interior designers. An Interior Design graduate is entitled to a Bachelor's degree in Interior Design or an Associate Degree if he qualifies. They must be at least 18 years old and in their first year of employment at the time of graduation.
