Several market reports on top international supply chain services predict the sentiments of the supply chain in 2022. The Covid-19 pandemic has made the global supply chain more resilient and innovative. Can we expect it to become steadfast in the coming year? Let’s try to present a lucid picture here listing the top supply chain forecasts for 2022. Supply chains are expected to become circular: Linear supply chains would be replaced by circular supply chains wherein manufacturers would be refurbishing discarded products for resale. This way the concerns of ever-increasing prices of raw materials and volatility in terms of their availability could be tackled effectively. Consequently, companies would be able to cut down on the costs involved in procuring raw materials and also enjoy a reduced risk of price and availability volatility. Furthermore, circular supply chains create less waste as compared to linear supply chains which would act as a positive step towards making the supply chains greener. Supply chains would be more resilient: The preparedness and proactiveness of supply chains towards future disruptions and immediate issues are expected to increase considerably in the coming year after the bumpy rides experienced in 2020 and 2021. A significant amount of digital acceleration would bring the supply chains closer to this goal. The rate at which digital adoption is happening, 2022 could be expected to be a year of extraordinarily resilient supply chains. Better transparency could be expected: Transparency and visibility are the two most sought-after attributes in a supply chain. Talking about supply chain services India, many companies have begun providing some sort of transparency to their customers with regards to the sustainability of their supply chains and the efforts undertaken to reduce their carbon footprint. Despite that, a lot more visibility is anticipated considering the shifting nature of global trade. Disclosing information in the form of timely reports or corporate disclosures for a variety of supply chain practices could be seen as a mandatory thing in the times to come. Digital transformation would be the key to success: In order to provide better visibility and transparency, most companies would be integrating the blockchain technology into their supply chains. Blockchain technology aids in minimizing disruptions and improving customer experience. Through this technology, all components of a supply chain could be integrated into a single platform. The operations carried out by carriers, shipping lines, logistics providers, and forwarders would be more streamlined and it would be easier for supply chain people to identify issues much before they occur. Besides the blockchain technology, an extensive adoption of IoT is predicted in the coming year. IoT helps in providing improved visibility in inventory management, production, and predictive maintenance leading to a more efficient supply chain. Automation through AI: Supply chains have witnessed considerable amount of automation through artificial intelligence already. The automation process could be expected to be more intense in 2022. Automation makes supply chains more efficient by reducing human errors. Through automation, it is also possible to predict purchase demands and manage inventory that otherwise require manpower. The pandemic immensely disrupted businesses and exposed the weaknesses of supply chain management. From stocking essentials to delivering products – the whole process from the field to the consumer was disrupted to a large extent. That’s not all! Apart from the pandemic, the supply chain scenario, is also greatly affected due to technological advancements. Most supply chain managers are struggling to establish an end-to-end process due to a lack of knowledge and skills in the latest technology. It’s high time that professionals upskill and reskill themselves if they want to thrive in the industry ahead. Industry Demand/Supply for Supply Chain roles As per research by Technavio, a leading market research company, the logistics market across borders is set to grow by USD 44.6 billion through 2021-2025. The supply chain has been reformed and redefined since the pandemic and now is set to grow rapidly. India’s logistics sector, which is currently at $250 million, is expected to grow by 10-12 % CAGR as its demand increases. Piyush Sharma, VP-Business of Locus sheds light on what the logistics sector would look like in 2022. “Moving forward, while supply chain resilience and green logistics continue to be vital for supply chains, brands will also invest a lot in automation and technology to plan and manage last-mile fulfilment more cost-efficiently.” This implies that, there will a huge demand for skilled professionals, one who can drive the business successfully. And to meet the employer’s requirement and in order to stand out from the rest, professionals should craft and develop the necessary capabilities. Since the Industrial Revolution in Britain in the 18th century, machines gained prominence and led to transforming the employment scenario. It led to new skillsets being born as the demand for production increased with machine usage. Over the years, the face of manufacturing and production has changed and given rise to the current supply chain. Similarly, with automation being introduced in the supply chain, it will lead to a new understanding of the employment of skilled workers who can coexist with technology while reaping its many benefits. Technology may be the new driving force, but strategic planning has a humane aspect to it, thus explaining the need for skilled professionals. Career Opportunities For Supply Chain Professionals Supply chain is a dynamic industry with a wide range of career options. Employment of logisticians is projected to grow 30% from 2020 to 2030. https://timestsw.com/course/iim-indore-executive-programme-in-operations-supply-chain-management/

According to a global survey report, the year 2022 is not anticipated to be bringing a breath of fresh air for container logistics players. Almost 75% of players are looking at revisiting their logistics strategy in the coming year. The list includes the top 10 logistics companies in India too. Container xChange’s survey report highlights the current sentiment of the global container logistics industry. The industry is predicting another gloomy year and challenges on their way in 2022. Among all the challenges this year, finding space on the vessel and various surcharges levied by carriers were the top ones. Let’s delve deeper into the key findings from the survey to understand the outlook for the year 2022: 1. The industry is holding a downbeat sentiment towards the performance of the supply chain in 2022. Out of the total respondents, 65% feel that the performance would either deteriorate or remain the same. 2. 53% highlighted finding slots on the vessel as the topmost challenge, followed by surcharges levied by the carriers as mentioned by 22%, and labor crisis as mentioned by 19%. 6% of the remaining respondents emphasized the challenge of lack of transparency and visibility in the supply chain. 3. 71% of the respondents mentioned rethinking their strategy. They are looking to diversify sourcing and hold more inventories. The majority mentioned that they would opt for diverse sourcing, some said that they would go for holding more inventories, and the remaining said that they are looking at entering into long-term contracts with carriers by avoiding the spot market and shorter supply chains. 4. Instead of getting equipment from carriers, 50% of respondents said that they would resort to one-way leasing, followed by long-term leasing contracts by 28% of respondents, and buying containers by 22%. Just when the container logistics industry showed the slightest signs of recovery, the Omicron variant made a dramatic entry and worsened the international sea freight cargo services scenario. It is being foreseen by the leaders of container logistics players that new variants are going to continuously disrupt the port operations and labor capacity as we make way into 2022. Uncertainty and unpredictability are going to be persistent throughout. On the brighter side, they are hopeful that the staggering earnings made by container logistics players in the year 2021 would be put to good use, e.g. improving service levels across their networks. They have also mentioned the industry’s awareness of shippers willing to pay higher prices for shipping. It is therefore believed that prices won’t be a constraint in the year 2022. With container prices and leasing rates starting to go down, the current rate spike could be the consequence of a temporary supply crunch. It is expected that with the easing up of labor union conflicts at the US ports, the capacity challenge would be improving worldwide. It is also predicted that the return to normal could be experienced in the second half of 2022 by the world’s container logistics players.
