With close to 365 million gamers in 2019 and 2022 estimates indicating a rise up to 486 million, India has emerged as the top 5 mobile gaming markets globally. With the day-on-day improvement in telecom infrastructure, evolving gaming ecosystem and a massive millennial/Gen Z user base, the Indian online gaming industry is experiencing significant growth on a steady basis. The nationwide lockdown against the COVID-19 pandemic further bolstered this growth with the influx of a large number of new online gamers. Incentives such as cash & prizes are attracting Indian consumers to spend their free time playing online games over watching OTT (Over-the-Top) content, a report said. Speaking of which, Indian telecom giants Reliance Jio & Bharti Airtel are eager to monetise this opportunity and are concentrating on gaming as an additional source of ad or subscription revenue. While the telecom companies’ strategy on gaming is still taking shape, Bank of America Securities feels that overtime with improving fixed broadband & 5G rollout, gaming will be a vital part of their monetisation plan. “Similar to their content strategy, we expect both telcos (Jio and Bharti Airtel) to tie-up with gaming companies rather than develop their own content,” the global research house said in a report.
